Running Pregnant BLOG
Week 40- I was
really hoping that I wouldn't be pregnant this week! Yet here I am, 40wks and 5 days. Arrgghh. I have walked 5 miles three
different times this week, trying to get labor to start. I really interesting experience happened to me yesterday at my OB apt. I saw a Nurse practitioner that I have not
seen before. The first thing she said to me was "I saw you in the waiting room and I thought to myself- now there's a
FIT pregnant woman! I didn't realize you were POST DATES!" (post dates means OVER DUE.) I said thanks, and it really
made me feel good that all my working out and eating well has paid off! There was a medical student also in the room and the
nurse practitioner was showing her how to feel the baby in my abdomen- and kept making comments like "this woman is very
lean, you can practically SEE the outline of the baby, she has virtually NO FAT." Which I thought was pretty funny because
I FEEL huge! But I supposed compared to a lot of other pregnant ladies I am pretty tiny. When it came time to measuring my fundal height (basically the size of my uterus-
you measure from pubic bone to top of uterus with a tape-measure) the Nurse practitioner was telling the student "This
mom is in such great shape, she is so easy to measure, you can actually SEE the outline of her uterus." So
even thought the appointment was a bummer because I have had no cervical change It was a mood booster to be so complimented
on my fitness. So for all you preggo's working out- keep it up!!! It will pay off!! And just so you know, at my 40wk
4 day apt my total weight gain has been 27 pounds- so right in the middle of "average". It's NOT like I have not
gained enough. I just think working out helps the weight you gain become muscle and baby and NOT fat!

Week 39- My Last Week?This
could very well be my last week pregnant. Wow! It has been a long journey. I will continue walking as much as I can
this week- Friday I had an extreme urge to clean so I didn't walk my usual 6 miles so I would have enough energy to get all
my cleaning done- and it took me 5 hours so I feel like I got a "work-out" anyway. Today (Saturday) the family
and I are going to the Water-park- which will involve a lot of walking also- so I will not do my daily walk today either--
I have been having a TON of contractions and want this baby to stay put until WEDNESDAY at least-- so backing off a couple
days is fine with me. At my 38.3 week apt last week I weighed 156 pounds- that is a 23 pound weight gain so far-- I
don't anticipate gaining too much more- maybe a pound or so. I have been feeling HUGE the past couple weeks- the baby
has definitely put on some weight and my belly is HUGE. I am walking MUCH slower and enjoying taking it "easy" .
I am getting up AT LEAST 5 times a night to go pee. I can just tell my body is getting ready for labor- it is so exciting
to anticipate when that may happen! I will not think about being "induced" until I am 42 weeks- but I really don't
think I will go that long- My 1st baby was 3 days over-due. My 2nd Child was a week early- my water was leaking so I was induced
with pitocin-- something I will avoid THIS time around at ALL costs-- and my 3rd was 1 day late. So I am guess baby Lucy will
be born anywhere between the 2nd-6th of September.

37 week workout Log: FULL TERM FINALLY! Friday 8/13- 6 mile powerwalk/jog outside with jog stroller. Saturday 8/14- P90X Back and Bi. It felt good to lift weights after walking all week. Sunday 8/15- 6 mile walk on incline/ jog on my incline trainer. I LOVE my incline trainer-
it is so padded, it is very easy on my joints. I can run on it 9 months pregnant with no knee pain. I had a few painful contx.
while running, some I had to stop and walk through- but that's to be expected at his stage- the baby is FULL TERM and could
come at ANY TIME. YEAH! I carried my other babies to 40 wks and expect to do the same this time, but there is always
that small chance she could come early.... that is what makes things exciting! Monday
8/16- 6 mile power walk- had several contractions. Tuesday
8/17- 6 mile power walk. Getting harder, but I just go slower. Wednesday
8/18- 6 mile power walk. Thursday 8/19- Off
Week 36: Wow, I am finally
36 weeks and only 1 more week until I am considered "full term". Of course, I will most likely carry this baby to
40 weeks, and thinking about that right now is more that I can handle. I am HUGE and cannot think about getting any bigger-
although I know I will. I have gained 24 pounds so far- not a whole lot, but it seems to all be in my belly (which is very
uncomfortable!) Since the kids have started school I am once again able to walk outside regularly pushing Vangie
in the jog stroller and I love it. I just CANNOT make myself get on the treadmill anymore- Its boring and painful. However,
if I am walking outside then the time goes by so much faster! I have a 5 mile loop that I do- not sure about my pace, other
than it is slow and I am not jogging at all really. I find my morning walk gives me energy and puts me in a good mood. On
the weekends when all the kids are home I will most likely do a weight workout in the garage.

Week 34: I realize that
I have been HORRIBLE lately at recording my workout. I AM still working out daily, I just forget to write it down and then
I can't remember what I did. sigh. Also, my running is behind me at this point- maybe the occasional 1/2 mile slow jog on
my treadmill... but it is just getting too painful and uncomfortable. I am enjoying my workout tapes a lot more these days.
I have P90X and have been doing some of those videos- Back and Biceps, Chest, shoulder and tri, Kenpo, Arms, Legs and Back--
those are the P90X videos that I can still do--- I have had the P90X videos for almost 4years, so I am accustom to them- these
are not something new that I am trying for the first time! I also have "Ultimate Tae-Bo" that I like and various
FIRM videos. I also have one pregnancy workout video that is pretty good and a pregnancy yoga that when I first tried
it a couple months ago I thought it was way too easy and boring, but these days it is feeling pretty good to be easy and boring!
I have been having a lot of Braxton Hicks contractions in the evening, and just all around feeling huge and uncomfortable-
working out helps me to feel better, I just need to be careful not to wear myself out!

32 week update- The last 3 weeks the kids and I were on vacation in Michigan. Between the Jet lag, my hip being so painful I had
to visit the chiropractor twice, visiting family and camping - plus a broken arm! (poor Joey) I did NOT continue with my running
like I had been doing. The treadmill at my Dad's house is NOT as padded as my treadmill so I found it very uncomfortable to
run on. Plus, I mostly just wanted to run/walk outside because the country there is so beautiful. On most days I was
able to run/walk at least 4 miles, and sometimes 7 miles. I probably took about 7 days completely off from doing anything.
The whole time I was gone I also found it very difficult to eat healthy- being somewhere other than my own kitchen makes that
a lot harder to do. Plus a lot of time was spent camping- which calls for hamburgers, hotdogs and potato salad and smores!!!
I tried to do the best I could, but I know it wasn't the greatest. I probably gained about 3 lbs while I was gone- which is
right on track for being in my 3rd trimester- I visit my midwife on Monday for my official weigh-in. Since being back home in Hawaii I have gotten back into working out and eating healthy. (okay, so it took a day of
transition to recover from the Jet-Lag!!) I am doing a more varried workout schedule now. I am incoorperating all over
weight lifting a couple times a week to help me recover more from running ( I have seveal total body FIRM videos
plus P-90X) and my running will be including more power walking.
WEEKLY MILEAGE 22- 42.5 miles 23- 40.0
miles 24- 45.0 miles 25- 38.5 miles 26-
41.5 miles 27- 43 miles
THIRD TRIMESTER: 28- 37 miles
Week 29 Pregnancy running log Friday- off. Painfull hip. Saturday- 4 miles on Treadmill. Sunday- off. In hospital with Joey and his broken arm.
Week 29 update- These next couple weeks I will be on vacation in Michigan. I thought I would be able
to get quite a bit of miles in here. I don't think that will be the case. First of all, the plane ride really aggravated my
hip pain. When I got here I could hardly walk. I went to the chiropractor my 1st day here. I am also doing back this week.
I think with the "relaxin" in my system now that I am in my 3rd trimester, my hip just won't stay where it needs
to. This is very frustrating, but I don't want to push it too hard and do permanent damage! So, my mileage will be much less
this week. Also, my Dad's treadmill is much less cushiony than my treadmill back home. This makes for a more painful
run- I miss my cushiony treadmill!! And my son broke his arm so I will have less down time to get my running done.
Week 28 pregnancy running Log Friday 6/11- 4 miles in the a.m. 4 miles in the p.m. (8 total)
. I had a horrible side stitch for the first 4 miles (low right side beneath my uterus. I know this is from my ligaments
stretching) So I decided to break my run into the am and pm. This worked well and as I get further along in my
pregnancy I will implement this more to keep my mileage up without overdoing in at one time. Saturday 6/12- 7 miles on the treadmill. again with the side stitch!!
It thankfully went away after 3 miles. Sunday 6/13-
5 miles a.m. 3 miles p.m. (8 total) - I enjoy splitting my run up into morning and night, that way I don't get overly
tired in the morning and my evening run gives me energy and helps me to eat healthy all day. If I know I am going to run I
stay away from eating too much. Monday 6/14-
Day off. Packed for our trip to Michigan tomorrow! Tuesday
6/15- 8 miles on the treadmill. Now I can sit and rest for my 9 hour plane ride later today. Wednesday 6/16- off. 12 hour plane trip. Hardly any sleep.
And now my HIP is killing me!!! Thursday 6/17-
6 miles on TM.
27 Week Update-
I am beginning my 27th week and still feeling pretty good. One thing that HAS been bothering
me is my right hip/pelvic area. I have had problems with this area before, it is like it gets un-aligned and kind of feels
like it needs to be popped back into place. This hip pain is the reason I have been to the chiropractor twice in the last
month- but I am not sure if this particular chiropractor is putting in back into place correctly - because it STILL hurts
and seems like it isn't getting any better- I feel like since I am pregnant he is reluctant to really apply the pressure needed
to realign my hip- which is silly because putting pressure on my hip area has nothing to do with my uterus. BUT, I know
he is not that familiar working with pregnant women so I would rather him exude caution that do something that could hurt
me or the baby. I am traveling home to my hometown in Michigan in 12 days and when I get there I plan on seeing my old chiropractor-
hopefully he is more successful at putting my pelvis back in line. IN THE MEANTIME, I will continue to try to stretch
it out and be more conservative with my running. I am no longer running on much of an incline, at all- the most I get up to
is 3% incline. Mostly I run at .5-1.5% incline. My speed is starting off slower at 5mph (12 min miles) for the first
mile and hovering mostly around 6-6.5mph (10 to 9 min miles) for the rest of the miles. It is also taking me longer
to get "warmed up" and I often don't start to feel loose until about 3 miles into my run. The BENEFITS I am getting
from my running far outweigh any minor inconvenience like hip pain or a long warm-up. I feel so GREAT when I am in the zone
and when I am done. I start my days feeling heavy, tight and sluggish, after my run I feel lighter, looser and much
more energetic! Keeping up my running regimen also helps me to eat healthier- I enjoy feeling fit! I will not lie, it
is hard to put on weight and get slower, but it is worth it for the end result of a beautiful baby. I just don't think pregnant
women need to throw out there fitness goals for 9 months! I think it is entirely possible to keep up your fitness and feel
great for most of the pregnancy. Next week (wk 28) I will be entering my 3rd trimester.... It will be interesting
to see how my running is affected.
Week 27 Pregnancy Running Log Friday 6/4- 6.5 miles ran on TM Saturday 6/5- 7 miles on TM Sunday 6/6- 9 miles on TM at a 9 min mile pace- this is what I
am usually running. My first mile is a 11 min mile and then I speed up to 9 min miles. During this run the last mile was pretty
difficult- My right glute muscle felt really tight and I had some painful chafing on my thighs. Monday 6/7- Ran 6m on treadmill. Last mile had a really bad pain
in my crotch--- ligaments stretching, oh joy. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse! Tuesday 6/8- Day off from running, instead spent several hours cleaning the
house really well. (Field Day!!) Wednesday 6/9- 7
miles on treadmill. Felt good. No hip, butt or crotch pain, I am very relieved about this. Maybe all I needed
was a day off. Thursday 6/10- 7.5
miles on treadmill. I had a lower right side stitch that caused me to run 11 min miles vs the 10 min miles I usually run,
total time 1hr and 13 min.

Pregnancy week 26 running log. Friday 5/28- Ran 9.5 on the TM. Took 40 min to warm up, but once I was I felt really
good. Saturday 5/29- Ran 7 on the TM. Sunday 5/30- Ran 6 on TM. Monday 5/31-
Ran 5 on TM. Tuesday 6/1- Ran 8 on TM. Wednesday 6/2- Rest day, but spent 2 hours deep cleaning the house. My Hip is really hurting today!! Thursday 6/3- Ran 6 on TM, hip still hurting.
Pregnancy week 25 running log Friday 5/21- Ran 9 miles outside pushing Vangie in Jog Stroller. Took me 2 hours-
30 min longer than the treadmill. I attribute this to big hills, stop lights and the fact I was pushing a stroller. Saturday 5/22- Ran 5 miles on Treadmill. 3 outside. Sunday 5/23- Ran 7 miles on Treadmill. Monday 5/24-
Ran 6 miles on TM, 2.5 outside. Tuesday and Wednesday- OFF days
from running. I was feeling pretty physically tired and sore. Plus I used these two days to do a lot of lifting, heavy furniture
moving (using the dolly) and thought it would be best to take off from running. However, I believe not running
left me feeling more tired. Thursday 5/27- back running after two
days off. 6 miles on the TM and it was HARD! I KNOW this was because it had been a while and my body just took extra long
to warm up and feel loose.
24 wk update: Yesterday I had my 24 wk OB apt. My midwife was VERY supportive of my running. She said that with her first pregnancy
she ran up until 36 wks. She said to keep it up as long as I feel like it! Weight Gain: So far I have gained 16 lbs
with this pregnancy- the midwife said my weight gain looked great at my appointment yyesterday. The funny thing is I
gained all 16 lbs within the first 16 weeks!! The fact I was so sick and laying on the couch all day and eating what
sounded good, i.e. NOT healthy food, had me gaining it very quickly. At my 16 wk appointment a different midwife told me my
weight gain was too much! But over the past 6 weeks I have been able to run (yeah!) and have been feeling better and
able to eat my usual healthy diet- which for me is several small meals a day and lots of veggies. I allow myself a dessert
a day- which lately has been an ice cream cone after dinner. So weight gain over the past 6 weeks has been 0lbs. My
goal is to keep the weight gain under 25 lbs total- which is where it was with my other 3 children, and that was WITHOUT running
so we will see it perhaps my weight gain is a little less this time around or perhaps my body is going to gain what it wants
to regardless. Running is still feeling really good. I am finding it VERY important to really "warm up"
my body before I begin running or it is very uncomfortable. To warm up I power-walk at 4mph on my treadmill at an incline
of 20-25%. ( I actually have an "incline trainer" which is like a treadmill but able to incline all the way up to
40% whereas a regular treadmill will only incline to 12%.) Once I walk a mile on such an incline, I run my second mile
at 5mph (12 min mile) at a 5% incline (which is still a pretty good incline!) Jogging on an incline helps stretch out
my calves and really gets my blood pumping. For my 3rd mile and beyond I take it down to about a 1-2% incline and anywhere
between 6pmh (10 min mile) to 7.3 mph. I have noticed on the days I run 9 miles I feel really tired and
worn down the rest of the day, so I am keeping my daily mileage at 7 miles or under, and just running everyday instead of
longer on some days with a day off. Taking a day completely off is hard because my body feels really tight and tired if it
doesn't get a chance to stretch out and I do not get my blood pumping.
Pregnancy week 24 running log Friday 5/14- 6 miles on treadmill. Saturday
5/15- 7 miles on treadmill. Sunday 5/16- Ran 7 on
treadmill. Monday 5/17- Ran 6 on treadmill. Tuesday 5/18- Ran 7 on treadmill. Wednesday
5/19- Ran 7 on treadmill. Thursday 5/10- Ran 5 on
treadmill. Easy day.

22 week Update- Welcome to my Pregnancy Running Log. I am starting at 22 weeks because
prior to this I just didn't keep any records of what and how far I ran, NOT because I just started running at 22 weeks pregnant,
that would be insane. I ran before I got pregnant and only took a few weeks (weeks 6-12) off because I suffered
from HORRIBLE morning sickness. At 14wks pregnant I ran a 10k in 55 min- not my best time, by far, but respectable. I have been a runner for 16 years and ran several marathons.
Running is my passion! This is my 4th pregnancy. I currently am a SAHM to 3 other children ages 7,5 and 3. This is the first
pregnancy that I have continued to run through- my other ones I was still very active but did more weight training and long
(over 5 mile) walks. I guess I am continuing my running this time around because it makes me feel good, physically I
am having no issues. I am posting my running
schedule to perhaps motivate other pregnant runners out there- I have come across some blogs of women who have run right up
to the day they deliver and it is truly inspiring. And also to motivate MYSELF! The larger I get the more motivation
I am going to need, I am sure. I am not sure howlong
I will continue to run- I guess as long as I feel good and have no issues I will keep it up. Running is the best mood
lifter I know of! It is a natural high that can never be improved upon. I have the type of personality that does not do well
with little activity. I am just a happier, calmer person if I get in a good run. If haven't run in a day or two I start
to get moody, grumpy and freak out at the littlest thing! It's about then that my husband suggests I go for a
run. I don't have "weekly mileage"
goal, I just do what feels right for that day- although I will probably strive to stay above 30 miles a week for as long as
I can. When I can no longer run I will continue power walking. I have a treadmill that I run on and I also push my 3
year old in my BOB stroller when my two oldest children are in school. School will be out in a month so that will keep me
on the treadmill a lot more often- and actually I find since my treadmill has a cushioned belt it is easier to run on.
When I run outside I run up and down several large hills because this is a hilly area. My pace is SLOW. I am not
out to break records. Before becoming pregnant I probably ran an average of 8 -8:30 miles. Now I am SURE it is more like 10-12
min miles.
Pregnancy Week 22 Running Log. Friday 4/30- Ran 7 miles outside pushing Vangie in Jog Stroller. Had a
cramp in lower belly that I had to walk through. At mile 3 it finally went away. Saturday 5/1- COvered 7 miles on treadmill. Powerwalked 1 mile at 15% incline as a warm
up. Ran 3. Power-walked 1 on 15% incline. ran 2. Sunday
5/2- Husband was home to watch the kids so I was able to run 5.5 outside by myself. Monday 5/3- covered 5 miles on treadmill. Power-Walked 1 to warm up. Ran 4. Tuesday 5/4- Covered 7.08 miles outside pushing jog stroller. Ran 95% of
it. Only walked up HUGE hill. Today I got my Gabrialla Maternity Support Belt in
the mail and it made running so much easier- I have a link on the RIGHT to the website. Wednesday 5/5- My plan was to do 5 on the treadmill, but I was feeling so good I did
6 instead. I walked .5 as a warm-up. Thursday- Ran
5 on TM, felt really easy. I didn't run until 3pm and had NO energy before, but felt 100% better afterwards, I LOVE running!
